Ginny's Blog-Skills Training and Training Camp

Two weeks ago myself and eleven other participated in skills training. I decided that I would like to specialize in canoeing so myself and three others had a great time canoeing all day long for 4 days. We had a great time learning how to keep our canoe straight, turning the canoe, and just how to have safe fun on the water. The best day was when we had to learn how to rescue people from the water. It was a lot of fun learning how to rescue a canoe out in the deep water and then have to practice it. It was a lot of fun seeing different people’s reaction to the cold water. We had many laughs that day. The best one was my partner and I had to go out and jump out of our canoe and then get back in without using land. My partner was pretty quick to get out but I was struggling. When I finally did get back in I was so ready just to be in the canoe but as I rolled into the canoe we did not have our balance just right so instead of staying in the canoe we went over again. It was very shocking to realize that the canoe you thought you were safe in is all of a sudden back in the water and you are with it. We laughed after and it ended up being pretty fun.
Then we as canoers were able to take one morning to teach all of the other skill participants the fine art of canoeing. It was great to be able to have some time to figure how to teach others and get ourselves ready for the summer. It was not very good weather for our teaching day as it was raining the whole time but everyone seemed to have fun at least. It was a really great learning experiment to have to teach in conditions that are not optimal.
This last week was Training Camp. Peter and Candice Jorgesen and I (as the head counsellors) were required to program direct this camp. It was really great finally being able to get together with Peter and Candice and start planning things for the camp and the summer. We had an awesome group to be working with so that was really nice. I am really looking forward to working with all these staff this summer.
I am now really looking forward to the weekend in Red Deer catching up with friends and just hanging out.
