Reminder Workday June 19
Come to the Rock and Bring a Rock
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:9-10
I recently had a great opportunity to travel to England and Croatia. I brought back with me a couple of thoughts I want to share.
My first thought comes from the city of Dubrovnik. This amazing ancient city has withstood wave after wave of destructive warfare (right up to and including the 1991-95 breakup of Yugoslavia). In 1491, the city was under siege by troops from the Ottoman Empire. The wise ruler declared that it would provide protection to all those who came but every one was to bring with them a rock to build up the walls. That sounds a lot like Nehemiah who encouraged the people of Jerusalem to rebuild the city walls by each one building next to his or her own house. (By the way this one of the few examples in old testament scripture and all ancient texts where women are recorded as doing some of the building . . .so ladies you’re not off the hook).
My second thought comes from a small town in Croatia called Cavtat. It’s a beautiful little place with some lovely beaches. It also has an architecturally impressive mausoleum. A family that died in the 1918 flu epidemic commissioned an important architect to build a monument to themselves – after they were dead. In some ways this struck me as sad. It is an incredibly beautiful building but it really serves no living purpose. It just houses the dead family. It speaks only of the past. It has no possibilities for the future. How much better would it be to build something that speak of the future – the lives of children, and of the opportunities that a facility like camp provides for introducing them to eternal life in Christ.
Why don’t you plan to come to camp this summer and build – whether in the lives of children or physically on the new lodge so we can continue to build – stone by stone – the Body of Christ.

There is an amazing little verse in 1 Samuel 7:12 that nicely sums up where we are -
Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far has the LORD helped us."
